WavEC Offshore Renewables was created in 2003 in response to the need and opportunity to create a centre of excellence and innovation especially dedicated to the promotion of wave energy and later also to other ocean activities (including, in a relevant way, offshore wind energy). WavEC plays a key role in the articulation between public policies, technology development and a supply chain with high added value, and promoting the market in offshore renewable energies not only in Portugal but also in the international context.

In its evolution path, WavEC has defended its vision as a leader in the development of innovative solutions in marine technology. Its mission is to develop sustainable solutions for the Blue Economy through innovation, knowledge transfer and dissemination. This mission carried out through technological and scientific support to companies and public administration, fostering a greater participation in R&D and Innovation projects at European and national levels, conducting consultancy for companies and interacting with international institutions.
